Information:
The Commando
War Memorial
Spean
Bridge is the first
major stop north of
Fort William, standing
at the junction of the
A82 up to Inverness,
and the A86 which
heads through Glen
Spean towards Loch
Laggan and on to
Strathspey.
A mile west of the village
is the famous Commando
Memorial. Erected in 1952,
it commemorates those
commandos who fell during
the Second World War - many
of whom trained in this
area when based at the
commandos' basic training
centre at
Achnacarry.
Take the
road along the
Caledonian Canal from
Chase The Wild Goose
Hostel for 5 miles,
avoiding the main A82 road, and
you will arrive at the Commando
War Memorial. A
beautiful, yet haunting setting
whatever the time of
day...
